Helpful Hints - Information Every Webmaster Needs

There are a couple of different routes you can take to web riches. First, you can try and do it on your own with a shotgun approach, searching the web, finding and submitting your url to the search engines one by one, posting on a few classified sites, then a few FFA (Free For All) pages, joining news groups and clubs and trying a little bit of everything. A few days here, a few days there, little or no traffic shows up, and you get discouraged and figure "What's the use?".

Fortunately, there are a number of folks who have been there already, made all the mistakes, figured out what succeeds, and are ready to provide you with the answers.

Pay Per Click Search Engines

One of the best and fastest ways to get visitors to your website is to pay for them. As time goes on many of the search engines are turning to this new model, which allows you to choose how much traffic you want and what price you are willing to pay. Check each of them carefully and you will be able to bring well targeted traffic to your site at a reasonable cost. Some of them have bonuses for signing up, which will make your advertising money go even further. Many of the new PPC search engines sell

BrainFox Pay Per Click Search Engine

The ONLY Pay per click search engine online with bids starting at $.001, instant listings, instant deposits, return on investment tracking and for a limited time - a 100% bonus on your first deposit. I've used this -- the 100% bonus makes your money go a long way. It's traffic is increasing and prices on many keywords are still very reasonable.

Search Engines

Your website is up and running, you've optimized it using some of the tools above--now you need traffic. Submitting your site to search engines is a good way to begin. You've got choices to make here. Submission services (free and paid) will place your website on many of the search engines, and for many of the less popular sites, this may be an ok choice. Just don't be fooled when they tell you that your site will be submitted to 300,000 sites for $6.95 or something similiar...most of those will be FFA (Free For All) pages. Nothing wrong with them, just don't expect much traffic from the FFA pages. Most of your traffic will come from the 10 largest engines, you'll want to submit to these manually.

Many search engines allow free submission, some of the larger ones charge a one time fee, and many (see below) are now using pay per click to generate visits. There are advantages to all, so choose wisely based on your budget.

Yahoo.com charges $299. (or $600. for an adult site) to guarantee that your site will be reviewed within seven days. This does not mean that you will automatically be included in Yahoo's directory. Your site must be up and complete before you submit to Yahoo. It also must include "substantively unique content", which means that if your site consists solely of links to affiliate programs, you probably won't make it into Yahoo. But, Yahoo is definitely the place you want to be, it will generate as much traffic as all the rest combined. So get your site in shape, then go to Yahoo.com.

Looksmart.com is another of the biggies. They claim to reach 83% of US web users (over 64 million people) and their search results are used by MSN, Excite, AltaVista, CNN, iWon, Juno and many more engines. Express submit costs $199. and guarantees review in two days. Basic submit for $99. gets the review in 8 weeks. This is another that will produce a good amount of traffic. Recommended!

Inktomi You can submit to Inktomi and be added to their index usually within 48 hours. The fee is $30 for the first URL, additional URLs are $15 each up to 100. Inktomi's indexer visits your sites multiple times weekly to ensure that your listings are always up to date. This saves the trouble of resubmitting when you make changes to your site.

Mamma.com has a velocity submit that cost $59.99 plus $19.95 per year, that guarantees review within 2 business days. There is also a standard submit for $29.99 plus $19.99 per year, with review within eight weeks. Adult sites cost double. Their page says that they reach over 7,000,000 unique visitors and return results for over 30,000,000 searches per month.

Altavista is one of the largest search engines with a huge following. Altavista has both a paid and free submit. With the paid submit, $39 for your first URL, $24 for URLs 2-10, and lesser amounts for more pages, buys you a six month subscription. Altavista's spider will visit your sites weekly, insuring that the index is kept up to date. The free entry method allows submission of only five URLs at a time, takes from 4-6 weeks, and is not guaranteed to place your site in the index.

Open Directory Project The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global army of volunteer editors. The price is right...free. AOL Search, Netscape Search, Lycos, Hotbot and many other sites get their results from the ODP.

Google.com offers it's users access to over 1.3 billion URLs. Submission is free (although they also have a way to purchase advertising), simple (add your home page URL and comments) and within 4-6 weeks, you can expect to start seeing visitors from Google. Well worth the effort!

There are hundreds of other search engines. One place to find many of them is SearchEngineColossus.com. Engines are listed by country as well as by subject.

FREE Web Traffic

If you are on a limited budget, there are ways to get traffic flowing to your site by expending time, rather than money. Many sites are available that wiil send a visitor to your site in return for you visiting other sites. So you spend a little time surfing and you get traffic in return. You also can get visits by referring others to use these sites.

The best part is you can usually have a few different sites going at the same time. You need to spend from 15-30 seconds at each site, in order to receive credit. So by rotating windows, you can get 5-10 credits per minute. I usually get slowed down, because every so often a site will appear that you just have to take a close look at. Here are a few of my favorites.

Hitharvester  Get 1-1 credit, and they use a 25 second timer. You can also buy clicks from them pretty reasonably (from $13.95 for 1,000 to $174.95 for 25,000).

Topsurfer  One for two credits plus other ways to win, like play bingo while surfing and win credits. I use this one all the time.

Traffic Generation!   Get *free* traffic to your Website Guaranteed! Check it out - It's free! Trafficg uses a 30 second timer and also gives one-for-one credits.

AskMiky  AskMiky gives one-to-one clicks, you can also buy clicks at 1000 for $10 up to 5000 for $45.

Webmasterquest  This site gives you 1 for 1 clicks and pays you 10% on referrals.
